Biography

Stephen Chow Sing-Chi (周星馳), born on June 22, 1962, in Hong Kong, is a renowned filmmaker, actor, and producer whose influence has significantly shaped the landscape of Asian cinema. He was raised by his mother, Ling Po Yee, after his parents divorced when he was seven. Chow grew up with two sisters and was inspired to pursue martial arts after watching Bruce Lee's film The Big Boss at the age of nine. His education included Heep Woh Primary School and San Marino Secondary School, where he developed his passion for acting and later enrolled in TVB's acting classes.

Chow began his career as an extra at Rediffusion Television before joining TVB in 1981, where he gained prominence as the host of the children’s program 430 Space Shuttle. His film career took off with Final Justice in 1988, earning him the Golden Horse Award for Best Supporting Actor. He reached new heights of fame in the 1990s with hits like The Final Combat and Fight Back to School, the latter becoming Hong Kong's highest-grossing film.

Chow transitioned to directing in 1994, with notable films such as Shaolin Soccer (2001) and Kung Fu Hustle (2004), both of which broke box office records and won multiple awards. His 2013 film Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons and the 2016 release The Mermaid further solidified his status, with The Mermaid becoming the highest-grossing film in China. Celebrated for his unique comedic style, Chow has earned accolades from institutions like the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which dubbed him the "King of Comedy."
