Jean-Paul Belmondo

Biography

Jean-Paul Belmondo (9 April 1933 – 6 September 2021) was a renowned French actor closely linked to the cinematic movement known as the New Wave during the 1960s.

Belmondo was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, located in Hauts-de-Seine, just west of Paris. Although he struggled academically, he discovered a love for boxing and football. He made his amateur boxing debut on 10 May 1949 in Paris, achieving a first-round knockout against Rene DesMarais and going on to have a short but unblemished boxing career with three consecutive first-round victories through 1950.

His rise to fame came with his pivotal role in Jean-Luc Godard's iconic film Breathless (1960), establishing him as a leading figure in the French New Wave. He later starred in Jean-Pierre Melville’s introspective drama Leon Morin, Priest (1961), as well as the film noir Le Doulos (1963) and Godard's Pierrot le fou (1965). In 1965, he transitioned to more mainstream cinema, primarily focusing on comedies and action films, but also delivered a standout performance in Alain Resnais' acclaimed work Stavisky (1974), often viewed as one of his best roles.

Throughout the mid-1980s, Belmondo enjoyed a successful career portraying charming adventurers and cynical protagonists. However, as he aged, he shifted his focus to theater, where he found renewed success. After suffering a stroke in 2001, he withdrew from performing until his return in 2009 with Un homme et son chien, marking his final appearance.

Belmondo passed away on 6 September 2021 at his Paris residence, following a period of health challenges, at the age of 88.
