He was a film and stage actor who later became a naturalized American citizen. When he immigrated to the United States in January 1938, his age was listed as 33 on the passenger manifest; however, his naturalization application confirmed his birth year as 1902. Throughout his career, he adopted several stage names, including Willy Eichberger and Charles Esmond, ultimately becoming known as Carl Esmond.
Esmond honed his craft at the prestigious State Academy of Dramatic Arts in Vienna, where he developed the skills that would serve him throughout his acting career.
