Henry Fonda
Biography
Henry Jaynes Fonda (May 16, 1905 – August 12, 1982) was a distinguished American actor whose illustrious career extended over fifty years in the film industry. Renowned for his compelling performances, Fonda earned an Academy Award for Best Actor from two nominations and is celebrated for his roles in numerous cinematic classics.
Fonda began his journey in the performing arts on Broadway before transitioning to film with his debut in 1935. He quickly gained recognition with notable performances, including his role as Bette Davis’s fiancé in the Oscar-winning Jezebel (1938) and as Frank in Jesse James (1939). His portrayal of the future president in Young Mr. Lincoln (1939), directed by John Ford, further solidified his status. One of his career highlights came with his nomination for Best Actor in The Grapes of Wrath (1940), which is frequently hailed as one of the finest American films.
During World War II, he starred in the screwball comedy The Lady Eve (1941) alongside Barbara Stanwyck, and after serving, he appeared in acclaimed Westerns, such as The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) and My Darling Clementine (1946). After a hiatus dedicating time to theater, he made a comeback with Mister Roberts (1955) and delivered a memorable performance as Juror No. 8 in 12 Angry Men (1957), winning a BAFTA for Best Foreign Actor.
In the later stages of his career, Fonda embraced darker roles, including the villain in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968), while also appearing in lighter films like Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). He took on significant military roles in Battle of the Bulge (1965) and Midway (1976). Fonda won his long-deserved Oscar for Best Actor for his last film On Golden Pond (1981), which featured his daughter Jane Fonda and Katharine Hepburn
