Rosemary DeCamp
Biography
Rosemary DeCamp was a versatile American actress known for her work in radio, film, and television. She gained prominence in November 1937 as Judy Price, the dedicated secretary/nurse to Dr. Christian in the enduring radio series of the same name. DeCamp also featured in the transcribed soap opera The Career of Alice Blair, which aired from 1939 to 1940.
Her film career began with Cheers for Miss Bishop, and she became a familiar face in numerous Warner Bros. productions. Among her notable films were Eyes in the Night, Yankee Doodle Dandy, where she portrayed Nellie Cohan alongside James Cagney, and Rhapsody in Blue. DeCamp also played a significant role as the mother in the adaptation of Jungle Book and starred in the beloved musicals On Moonlight Bay and its sequel, By The Light of the Silvery Moon, as Doris Day's mother.
In television, DeCamp made a memorable impression as Peg Riley in the initial TV adaptation of The Life of Riley alongside Jackie Gleason. She became a mainstay on NBC's The Bob Cummings Show from 1955 to 1959, portraying Margaret MacDonald. Throughout her career, DeCamp appeared in various series, including roles in Ensign O'Toole, Breaking Point, and That Girl. She also portrayed the mother of Shirley Partridge in The Partridge Family from 1970 to 1973.
DeCamp's life took an unusual turn on July 7, 1946, when her Beverly Hills home was damaged by a wing from Howard Hughes's XF-11 crash. Remarkably, she and her husband were unharmed. Rosemary DeCamp's enduring legacy in entertainment continues to be celebrated by fans and industry peers alike.
