He passed away on May 11, 1994, in Los Angeles, California, leaving behind a legacy marked by creativity and boldness.

In 1962, Carey took on multiple roles as writer, producer, director, and star of the feature film *The World's Greatest Sinner*, which featured a score by the avant-garde musician Frank Zappa. Although it did not achieve widespread commercial success, the film garnered a cult following, particularly during the midnight movie screenings in Los Angeles throughout the 1960s, cementing Carey's status as a pioneer in independent filmmaking.

Carey showcased his acting talent in several notable films, including Stanley Kubrick's *The Killing* and *Paths of Glory*, as well as John Cassavetes' *Minnie and Moskowitz* and *The Killing of a Chinese Bookie*.
