Hristo Shopov
Biography
Hristo Naumov Shopov, born on January 4, 1964, in Sofia, Bulgaria, is a distinguished actor recognized for his impactful performances in film and theater. Following in the footsteps of his father, Naum Shopov, who is also a celebrated Bulgarian actor, Hristo made his acting debut in 1981 with the film "Dishay, choveche" (Breathe, Little Man!).
Shopov gained international fame for his portrayal of Pontius Pilate in Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," a role that significantly elevated his profile beyond Bulgaria. His extensive filmography features notable Bulgarian works such as "Vchera" (Yesterday) and "Sledvay me" (Follow Me). "Vchera," in particular, resonates with many Bulgarians, as it captures the experiences of youth studying in England during the Communist era.
His talent has also led him to participate in various low-budget American films, including "Phantom Force," "Target of Opportunity," and "Alien Hunter." Notably, Mary Soan, an assistant director on "I Am David," recommended him to casting director Shaila Rubin for the role of Pilate, which he ultimately secured after a brief discussion with Gibson. Additionally, he reprised the role of Pontius Pilate in the 2006 film "The Inquiry," alongside renowned actor Max von Sydow.
Recently, Shopov took on the role of the Russian premier in the upcoming film "Command Performance," which is both directed by and stars Dolph Lundgren.
