Biography

Thorley Swinstead Walters (12 May 1913 – 6 July 1991) was a distinguished English character actor known for his versatile performances in film and television. He gained widespread recognition for his comedic roles, particularly in classic films like *Two-Way Stretch* and *Carlton-Browne of the FO*. His significant contributions to television include a memorable role in the critically acclaimed drama *Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy*.

Walters is perhaps most notable for portraying Dr. John Watson, the iconic sidekick to Sherlock Holmes, in four different films: *Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace* (1962), *The Best House in London* (1969), *The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother* (1975), and *Silver Blaze* (1977). He also appeared in three films of the beloved *St Trinian's* series, beginning as an army major in *Blue Murder at St Trinian's* and later as Butters in *The Pure Hell of St Trinian's*, and returning as Culpepper-Brown in *The Wildcats of St Trinian's*.

In the realm of horror cinema, Walters featured in several Hammer films, including *The Phantom of the Opera* (1962) and *Dracula, Prince of Darkness* (1966). His personal life intersected with his professional world; he was known to have visited his friend Terry-Thomas during his illness, leading to the organization of a charity gala in 1989 to support him. Thorley Walters passed away in a London nursing home, leaving behind a rich legacy in British cinema.
