Hattie Jacques
Biography
Josephine Edwina Jacques, famously known as Hattie Jacques, was born on February 7, 1922, in England and became a beloved comedy actress before her passing on October 6, 1980. Hattie's career took off in the 1940s, where she found fame through her radio performances, notably with Tommy Handley on the popular show ITMA, and later alongside Tony Hancock in Hancock's Half Hour.
Her iconic presence on screen was solidified with her participation in fourteen Carry On films from 1958 to 1974, where she frequently portrayed the role of a no-nonsense hospital matron. Hattie also enjoyed a fruitful collaboration with comedian Eric Sykes, appearing in his long-running television series, Sykes. Additionally, she showcased her talent in two films featuring Norman Wisdom, namely The Square Peg and Follow a Star.
Jacques was married to fellow actor John Le Mesurier from 1949 until their divorce in 1965. In her final year, she made a memorable appearance in an advertisement for Asda, which marked her last television role. Sadly, Hattie Jacques passed away due to a heart attack later that same year, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and cherished performances in British comedy.
