Linda Bassett
Biography
Linda Bassett, born in the picturesque village of Pluckley, Kent, is known as the backdrop for the beloved television series The Darling Buds of May (1991). Raised in Pimlico, South London, by her mother, a typist, and her father, a police officer, Linda's passion for acting ignited during her childhood visits to the theatre, particularly the renowned Old Vic. After completing her schooling, she joined the Old Vic as an usherette and catering manager, which further fueled her interest in the performing arts. Although she enrolled in Leeds University to study English, she left after a year to engage with a local drama group that performed in community venues, considering this her true theatrical education, as she lacked formal training.
Linda made her London stage debut at the age of 32 in 1982, which marked the beginning of a distinguished career. In 1991, she became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, solidifying her reputation as a talented stage performer. However, it was her role in the 1999 film adaptation of East Is East, where she had previously performed on stage, that introduced her to a broader audience. Throughout the 2000s, she enjoyed a successful career, appearing in numerous films and television shows. In the late 1980s, Linda returned to her roots in Pluckley, where she continues to reside.
