Biography

Masako Ōta, widely recognized by her stage name Meiko Kaji, is a celebrated Japanese actress and enka singer born on March 24, 1947, in Chiyoda, Tokyo Prefecture.

Kaji's artistic journey began after she graduated from Yakumo Academy in Meguro in 1965, leading to her debut at Nikkatsu Studios, where she initially took on supporting roles during the late 1960s. Her breakthrough came in 1969 with her performance in *Nihon Zankyoden*, but it was the *Stray Cat Rock* series (1970-1971) that truly elevated her status, as she portrayed rebellious characters across five films.

The 1970s marked a significant period in Kaji's career, particularly through her portrayal of fierce anti-heroes in the *Joshuu Sasori* (Prisonnière Scorpion) series at Toei, where she starred in four films beginning in 1972. She became an iconic figure with her role in *Lady Snowblood* (1973), a film that notably influenced Quentin Tarantino's *Kill Bill*. Among her other important works is *Double Suicide at Sonezaki* (1978).

In addition to her acting, Kaji has made her mark as a singer, releasing numerous albums and singles that complement her film work. Over the decades, she has appeared in more than 100 films and television series, solidifying her legacy in Japanese cinema.
