Geoffrey Palmer
Biography
Geoffrey Dyson Palmer, OBE (June 4, 1927 – November 5, 2020), was a distinguished English actor celebrated for his memorable performances in British television comedies. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Jimmy Anderson in "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" (1976–1979), Ben Parkinson in "Butterflies" (1978–1983), and Lionel Hardcastle in "As Time Goes By" (1992–2005). In addition to his television work, Palmer appeared in notable films such as "A Fish Called Wanda" (1988), "The Madness of King George" (1994), "Mrs. Brown" (1997), and "Tomorrow Never Dies" (1997).
Born in North Finchley, Middlesex, Palmer was the son of Frederick Charles Palmer, a chartered surveyor, and Norah Gwendolen. He attended Highgate School and served as a corporal instructor in the Royal Marines from 1946 to 1948. Following his military service, he embarked on a career in acting, starting as an unpaid trainee assistant stage manager.
Palmer's early television career featured roles in "The Army Game," "The Baron," and "Cathy Come Home." He soon transitioned to major theatrical productions, including John Osborne's "West of Suez," and worked under the direction of Laurence Olivier. His comedic talents flourished in the late 1970s with roles in "The Professionals" and "Fawlty Towers."
In his later years, Palmer worked alongside Judi Dench in "As Time Goes By" and contributed to significant films, further solidifying his legacy. Married to Sally Green in 1963, he had two children, Harriet and Charles, and enjoyed fly fishing in his leisure time. Palmer passed away peacefully at home at the age of 93.
