Biography

Janet Gaynor (October 6, 1906 – September 14, 1984) was a renowned American actress and painter.

Gaynor emerged as one of the leading stars of the silent film era, and in 1928, she made history by becoming the inaugural recipient of the Academy Award for Best Actress. This accolade was awarded for her remarkable performances in three films: Seventh Heaven (1927), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927), and Street Angel (1928). Notably, she remains the only actress to have won the award for multiple performances in a single year, a practice that was altered by the Academy just three years later. As sound films began to dominate the industry, Gaynor adapted and achieved significant acclaim in the original version of A Star Is Born (1937).

Following the late 1930s, Gaynor’s film appearances became infrequent. In 1982, she suffered serious injuries in a car accident, which played a significant role in her passing two years later.
