Biography

Irene Handl (27 December 1901 – 29 November 1987) was a renowned British character actress and novelist, best known for her extensive work in over 100 British films.

Born in Maida Vale, London, she was the younger daughter of Friedrich Handl, an Austrian émigré and stockbroker, and Marie (née Schiepp), a German national. Both parents became naturalized British citizens. Irene grew up in a middle-class household, benefiting from a comfortable upbringing that included household staff. She received her education at Paddington and Maida Vale High School from 1907 to 1915. In the 1920s, she traveled multiple times to New York with her father, but held no formal occupation at the time.

Handl studied acting under a relative of Dame Sybil Thorndike and made her stage debut in February 1937 at the age of 36. By 1939, she was living with her widowed father in London, a relationship that lasted until his passing in 1961.

Her film career showcased her talent for portraying quirky characters, featuring roles as eccentric mothers, grannies, and landladies. Some of her notable performances include appearances in "I'm All Right Jack" (1959), "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" (1970), and the original "The Italian Job." A passionate Elvis Presley fan, she served as the president of the Lewisham Elvis Presley fan club and was a devoted advocate for Chihuahuas.

Irene Handl passed away at age 85 in her Kensington flat, reportedly from cancer, and was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium. She remained unmarried throughout her life.
