Robert Stack
Biography
Robert Langford Modini Stack was a versatile American actor and television host, recognized for his work across film and television. Born on January 13, 1919, in Los Angeles, California, Stack spent part of his early childhood in Europe, where he became fluent in French and Italian before learning English upon returning to the U.S. In addition to his acting pursuits, he was also a skilled skeet shooter, breaking two world records and winning multiple championships.
Stack studied drama at Bridgewater State College and, at the age of 20, landed his first Hollywood role. He enjoyed a fruitful career in the 1940s, appearing in over 40 films. After serving in the military during World War II, he returned to the screen with notable performances in films like The High and the Mighty alongside John Wayne and Written on the Wind (1957), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
His career took a turn toward television when he portrayed the legendary crime fighter Eliot Ness in the acclaimed series The Untouchables from 1959 to 1963, earning an Emmy Award for Best Actor in 1960. Following this success, Stack starred in various dramas before embracing comedy, often parodying his signature serious persona.
Beginning in 1987, he hosted the true crime series Unsolved Mysteries, guiding viewers through unsolved cases until the show concluded in 2002. Robert Stack's legacy in entertainment endures as a remarkable figure in film and television history, passing away on May 14, 2003.
