Biography
Joe Armstrong is a talented English actor, recognized for his compelling performances in popular television series such as Robin Hood, Happy Valley, and The Village. His film credits include notable works like Darkest Hour and The Hollow Crown, showcasing his versatility across different genres.
Born in 1978 in Hammersmith, London, Armstrong hails from a family of performers, with his father being the esteemed actor Alun Armstrong. He has two brothers: Tom and Dan, the latter of whom is known for his role in the band Clock Opera. Armstrong received his education at Elliott School in Putney from 1993 to 1997, later pursuing his passion for acting at the University of Bristol. There, he participated in productions like The Brecht Project in 1998 and Women Beware Women in 1999.
Armstrong's breakthrough came in 2006 when he was cast as Allan A Dale in the BBC’s Robin Hood, a role he maintained throughout the show's three-season run from 2006 to 2009. In 2014, he portrayed Ashley Cowgill in the acclaimed series Happy Valley, earning critical acclaim for his portrayal of a police officer embroiled in a murder investigation. His role in The Village in 2017 as Bairstow further solidified his reputation, as critics praised his nuanced performance.
Currently, Armstrong is engaged in filming The Undeclared War, a six-part thriller for Channel 4, where he will take on the role of Daniel Granger, a computer analyst involved in a high-stakes cyberwarfare operation.
