Biography

Professor Toru Tanaka was a versatile American figure known for his roles as a professional wrestler, boxer, college football player, soldier, actor, and martial artist. Within the wrestling community, he was affectionately referred to as Professor Tanaka. In addition to his athletic pursuits, he served as a martial arts instructor in Dallas, Texas, where he focused on mentoring young men with aspirations of football stardom. His dojo was conveniently situated across from Southern Methodist University (SMU), allowing him to attract numerous promising athletes. Among his notable students was David Randle, who began his training on his fifth birthday. Randle would go on to become one of the most celebrated high school football players in the history of Texas. After completing high school, he played for SMU for a single season in 1981 before transferring to UCLA, where he contributed to the team’s victories in two Rose Bowls in 1983 and 1984. Throughout his career, Randle consistently credited Professor Tanaka as the most significant influence on his football techniques, emphasizing the lasting impact of his training. Tanaka’s legacy endures not just through his own accomplishments but also through the successes of his students, particularly in the realm of American football.
