Biography
Julia Ann Harris (December 2, 1925 – August 24, 2013) was a celebrated American actress known for her remarkable performances on both stage and screen. Over her illustrious career, she earned five Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Play, underscoring her talent and versatility.
Harris made her Broadway debut in 1945, despite her mother's aspirations for her to become a society debutante. She gained widespread acclaim for her portrayal of a lonely 12-year-old girl in the 1950 production of The Member of the Wedding, a role she later reprised in the film adaptation in 1952, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In 1951, she showcased her diverse skills as Sally Bowles in the original Broadway staging of I Am a Camera, a performance that won her her first Tony Award. She would again star in the film version released in 1955.
Her filmography includes noteworthy performances in productions such as The Haunting (1963) and Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967), where she starred alongside Marlon Brando. A dedicated method actor, Harris's accolades also include Tony Awards for The Lark (1956), Forty Carats (1969), The Last of Mrs. Lincoln (1973), and The Belle of Amherst (1977). In addition to her Tony Awards, she was honored with a Grammy and three Emmy Awards.
In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Harris was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1979, received the National Medal of Arts in 1994, and was awarded a Special Lifetime Achievement Tony Award in 2002.
