Zakir Hussain
Biography
Zakir Hussain Qureshi (9 March 1951 – 15 December 2024) was an illustrious Indian tabla maestro, composer, arranger, percussionist, music producer, and film actor. As the eldest son of the legendary tabla player Alla Rakha, he earned acclaim as one of the finest tabla players of his time and a leading figure in percussion. Hussain played a pivotal role in bringing Indian classical music to international audiences, effortlessly blending traditional sounds with contemporary styles.
Affectionately known as 'Ustad,' Hussain's contributions to music were recognized with numerous prestigious accolades. He received the National Heritage Fellowship from the United States National Endowment for the Arts, a testament to his impact on traditional music. In 1990, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the Government of India, followed by the esteemed Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, Ratna Sadsya, in 2018.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hussain garnered seven Grammy nominations, securing four wins, including three in 2024. His remarkable skill on the tabla was highlighted by The Guardian, which called him the most recognizable tabla exponent, while The New York Times praised the speed of his fingers, likening it to the rapid beat of a hummingbird’s wings.
