Biography

Yaphet Frederick Kotto (November 16, 1939 – March 15, 2021) was a distinguished American actor celebrated for his dynamic roles in both film and television. Best known for his portrayal of Lieutenant Al Giardello in the critically acclaimed NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street, which aired from 1993 to 1999, Kotto's career spanned several decades and genres. He gained significant recognition for his role as the menacing Dr. Kananga/Mr. Big in the iconic James Bond film Live and Let Die (1973). Kotto also showcased his versatility in the science-fiction horror classic Alien (1979), where his performance contributed to the film's legendary status.

In the 1987 action-packed film The Running Man, he starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, further solidifying his reputation in the action genre. Additionally, he appeared in the 1988 comedy thriller Midnight Run, where he played the role of FBI Agent Alonzo Mosley opposite Robert De Niro.
