John McLiam
Biography
John McLiam, originally named John Williams, was a distinguished Canadian actor celebrated for his remarkable ability to master various accents. Born on January 24, 1918, he left an indelible mark on both stage and screen before his passing on April 16, 1994. His film career featured notable roles in classics such as "My Fair Lady" (1964), where he portrayed a Cockney character, and "In Cold Blood" (1967), in which he played the tragic figure Herbert Clutter. Other significant performances included John Frankenheimer's adaptation of "The Iceman Cometh" (1973), "The Missouri Breaks" (1976), and "First Blood" (1982).
McLiam's early life saw him attending St. Mary's College of California. His service as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II earned him a Bronze Star. He briefly pursued journalism with the San Francisco Examiner before turning to acting. He adopted the stage name McLiam, reflecting the Gaelic heritage of his family.
His theatrical journey commenced in 1946 with Maxwell Anderson’s "Winterset." McLiam made his Broadway debut in 1951 with "Barefoot in Athens," followed by roles in significant plays like Shaw's "Saint Joan" and the original cast of "One More River" (1960). Later, he moved to California, where he continued to thrive in film and television. A creative individual, he also penned the Broadway play "The Sin of Pat Muldoon." McLiam is remembered not only for his versatile performances but also for his contributions to the arts. He is survived by his wife Roberta and their daughter, Claire. His final resting place is at Santa Barbara Cemetery in California.
