He gained prominence as the co-creator of the acclaimed animated series *Home Movies*, which aired from 1999 to 2004 alongside collaborator Loren Bouchard. This series showcased Small's unique comedic style and storytelling prowess.

Later, he teamed up with Tommy Blacha to bring *Metalocalypse* to life, a groundbreaking animated show that ran from 2006 to 2013. This series satirized heavy metal culture and featured an original soundtrack that resonated with fans of the genre. In addition to his work in animation, Small is celebrated for his creation and performance with the fictional melodic death metal band, Dethklok.
