Bonita Granville
Biography
Bonita Granville, born on February 2, 1923, in New York City to Bernard 'Bunny' Granville and Rosina Timponi, emerged from a family deeply rooted in the performing arts. Her early foray into acting began on stage, and at just nine years old, she made her film debut in *Westward Passage* (1932). Granville quickly garnered attention for her portrayal of mischievous characters, such as the troublesome Mary in *These Three* (1936), a role that earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
She is best known for her iconic role as Nancy Drew in the beloved Nancy Drew series from 1938 to 1939, where she captured the spirit of the clever young detective. Additionally, Granville shared the screen with Mickey Rooney in several *Andy Hardy* films. Despite her early success, she never achieved a significant breakthrough in film. After marrying oil tycoon and producer Jack Wrather in 1947, she stepped away from acting in the mid-1950s, though she transitioned to a successful career as an executive producer, notably for the *Lassie* television series starting in 1954.
Following Wrather's passing in 1984, Granville took the reins as chairman of the Wrather Corporation. Her civic contributions included leadership roles with the American Film Institute and the John F. Kennedy Center. Granville passed away from cancer on October 11, 1988, in Santa Monica, California, leaving behind a legacy enriched by her four children and her impact on the entertainment industry.
