Biography

Christian Berkel, born on October 28, 1957, in Berlin, Germany, is a distinguished German actor known for his versatile performances across film and television. Growing up in a military family, with his father serving as a doctor, Berkel moved to Paris at the age of 14. There, he honed his craft under the tutelage of renowned dramatists Jean-Louis Barrault and Pierre Berlin.

Following his education at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin, Berkel made a name for himself on stage, performing in prominent theaters in Augsburg, Düsseldorf, Munich, Vienna, and the Schiller Theatre in Berlin. His television career quickly flourished, but it was his role as Doctor Ernst-Günther Schenck in the critically acclaimed film "Downfall" that garnered him widespread recognition.

Berkel has continued to build an impressive filmography, with notable performances in Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book," as well as major Hollywood productions such as "Flightplan," "Valkyrie," where he portrayed Colonel Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim, and Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," which was nominated for an Academy Award.
