I. Stanford Jolley

Biography

Isaac Stanford Jolley (October 24, 1900 – December 7, 1978) was a prominent American character actor known for his roles in films and television, especially in westerns where he often portrayed cowboys, lawmen, or antagonists. Notable for his slender physique, elongated face, and thin moustache, Jolley graced both the big and small screens over five hundred times throughout his career.

Jolley was born in a circus trailer in Elizabeth, New Jersey, while his father’s circus was making a brief stop there. As a child, he traveled with the family circus and later performed in vaudeville. His formative education in acting took place at the Edward Clark Academy Theater.

Jolley made his television debut from 1950 to 1953, featuring in six episodes of The Lone Ranger alongside Clayton Moore. He further appeared in the western series The Range Rider and Tales of the Texas Rangers, among others. Noteworthy performances included his role as the henchman Walt in a 1954 episode of Annie Oakley and Sheriff Bascom in Stories of the Century.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Jolley became a familiar face on numerous western shows, such as The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, The Cisco Kid, and Gunsmoke. His later appearances included roles in the series Pony Express, The Tall Man, and Branded. Jolley’s final western performances occurred in 1976 in The Macahans and The Quest, marking the end of his long and varied career in the industry.
