Biography
Gian Maria Volonté (April 9, 1933 – December 6, 1994) was a distinguished Italian actor celebrated for his impactful performances in both Italian cinema and international films. He gained widespread recognition outside Italy for his portrayal of the primary antagonist in Sergio Leone's iconic Spaghetti Westerns, A Fistful of Dollars (where he was credited as "Johnny Wels") and For a Few Dollars More.
In Italy and throughout Europe, Volonté became renowned for his roles in significant social dramas that captured the political and societal upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s. He collaborated extensively with director Elio Petri, featuring prominently in films such as We Still Kill the Old Way (1967), Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (1971), The Working Class Goes to Heaven (1971), and Todo modo (1976).
