Biography

Edwin Stafford Nelson, born on December 21, 1928, is a distinguished American actor renowned for his extensive work across television, film, and theater. Over the course of his career, he has featured in over fifty films and countless television shows, in addition to hundreds of live stage performances. Until 2005, he taught acting and screenwriting at two universities in his hometown of New Orleans; however, the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina led him to relocate to Sterlington, situated near Monroe in Ouachita Parish, northeastern Louisiana.

Nelson’s journey into acting commenced during his studies at Tulane University, but he left after two years to pursue training at the New York School of Radio and Television Technique. Following his graduation, he took on a directorial role at WDSU-TV in New Orleans. By 1956, he shifted his focus entirely to acting and moved to Los Angeles, where he collaborated with the esteemed B-movie producer Roger Corman on projects like Cry Baby Killers and A Bucket of Blood.

His early television career saw him in guest roles on series such as The Fugitive and Bonanza, but it was his portrayal of Dr. Michael Rossi in the ABC drama Peyton Place (1964-1969) that brought him widespread acclaim. After the show concluded, he continued to diversify his career with various productions, including the critically acknowledged film Riding with Death (1976). Nelson has also been involved in the Screen Actors Guild and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 1999, he completed his undergraduate degree from Tulane University at the age of seventy-one. Currently, he enjoys a semi-retired life with his wife, Patsy, while spending time with their six children and fourteen grandchildren.
