Peter Joseph Egan, born on September 28, 1946, is a distinguished British actor celebrated for his memorable television performances. He gained recognition for his role as Hogarth in "Big Breadwinner Hog," and portrayed the future King George IV in "Prince Regent" in 1979. Egan's charm shone through as Paul Ryman, the smooth-talking neighbor in the beloved sitcom "Ever Decreasing Circles," which aired from 1984 to 1989. More recently, he captured audiences' hearts as Hugh "Shrimpie" MacClare, Marquess of Flintshire, in the acclaimed series "Downton Abbey," from 2012 to 2015.

Born in Hampstead, London, Egan is the son of Doris (née Pick) and Michael Thomas Egan, who has Irish ancestry. He received his education at St. George's Roman Catholic Comprehensive School in Maida Vale, followed by attendance at the London Oratory School. He honed his craft further at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
