Donald Sinden
Biography
Sir Donald Alfred Sinden CBE, born on 9 October 1923, is a distinguished English actor renowned for his contributions to theatre, film, and television. Hailing from Plymouth, Devon, he spent his childhood in the quaint village of Ditchling, Sussex, where his family home, affectionately known as 'The Limes,' also served as the local chemist. Sinden's personal life included a long marriage to actress Diana Mahony from 1948 until her passing in 2004. Together, they raised two sons: Donald Sinden, an actor who tragically succumbed to lung cancer in 1996, and Marc Sinden, a notable West End theatre producer.
Sinden's acting journey began at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. His professional debut occurred in January 1941 at the Brighton Little Theatre, where he portrayed Dudley in George and Margaret. His early career flourished as he performed for the Mobile Entertainments Southern Area, entertaining troops with modern comedies during World War II.
In 1953, he signed a seven-year contract with the Rank Organisation at Pinewood Studios, which led to his appearances in several iconic British films of the 1950s. His filmography includes celebrated titles such as The Cruel Sea, Mogambo, Doctor in the House, Above Us The Waves, Doctor at Large, The Siege of Sidney Street, and Twice Round the Daffodils, showcasing his versatility as an actor. Today, he resides near Tenterden, Kent.
