Robert Coote
Biography
Robert Coote (4 February 1909 – 26 November 1982) was a distinguished English actor renowned for his portrayals of British aristocrats and military figures in numerous films. He is perhaps best remembered for originating the role of Colonel Hugh Pickering in the original Broadway production of *My Fair Lady*, which ran from 1956 to 1962.
Born in London and educated at Hurstpierpoint College in Sussex, Coote launched his theatrical journey at the tender age of 16, performing across Britain, South Africa, and Australia before making his way to Hollywood in the late 1930s. There, he garnered attention for his roles as pompous British characters, including a notable performance as Sgt. Bertie Higginbotham in the classic film *Gunga Din* (1939). His acting career was briefly halted by his service as a squadron leader in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Following the war, he appeared in *A Matter of Life and Death* (1946), which was part of the first-ever Royal Film Performance.
Coote's stage career flourished after *My Fair Lady*, where he also originated the role of King Pellinore in *Camelot* (1960-63). He received an Emmy nomination for his role in the NBC series *The Rogues* (1964-65) and made a memorable appearance in *The Honeymooners* in 1966. His final film role was in *Theatre of Blood* (1973), and he concluded his acting career as orchid nurse Theodore Horstmann in the 1981 series *Nero Wolfe*. Coote passed away peacefully in his sleep at the New York Athletic Club in November 1982 at the age of 73. He maintained a close friendship with actor David Niven, even sharing a home in the late 1930s.
