James Tolkan
Biography
James Tolkan, a dynamic and commanding character actor, is well-known for his portrayals of tough, hard-boiled figures in both film and television. Born James Stewart Tolkan on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, he grew up in a family with a cattle-dealing background—his father was Ralph M. Tolkan. Tolkan pursued his education at the University of Iowa, Coe College, and Eastern Arizona College. After a year of service in the United States Navy, he moved to New York City, where he honed his acting skills under the guidance of renowned instructors Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler at the Actors Studio.
With his short stature, bald head, piercing eyes, and an intense, gravelly voice, Tolkan is often cast in roles that require a rugged, no-nonsense presence. His career took off in the late 1960s, and he made a strong impression in two Sidney Lumet films: as a homophobic police lieutenant in the gritty classic *Serpico* (1973) and as a cunning district attorney in *Prince of the City* (1981). Tolkan is perhaps best recognized as the overzealous principal Gerard Strickland in the *Back to the Future* trilogy. His other notable performances include Napoleon in Woody Allen's *Love and Death* (1975), a military officer in *WarGames* (1983), the wry assistant in *Turk 182* (1985), the tough Stinger in *Top Gun* (1986), and the volatile Detective Lubric in *Masters of the Universe* (1987). Additionally, he portrayed a meek mob accountant in *Dick Tracy* (1990) and Wesley Snipes' formidable boss in *Boiling Point* (1993).
