Ruth Sheen
Biography
Ruth Sheen, born in 1952 in London, is a prominent English actress whose career spans several decades. She honed her craft at the East 15 Acting School and has been a notable presence in British television and film since 1988. Sheen gained recognition on the small screen with recurring roles, including Nanny Simmons in the period drama Berkeley Square (1998) and Nurse Ethel Carr in Bramwell (1995–1998). Additionally, she showcased her versatility by portraying four different characters in six episodes of the long-running series The Bill from 1989 to 2004.
A significant collaboration in her career has been with acclaimed director Mike Leigh, for whom she has delivered memorable performances in five films. She starred as Shirley in High Hopes (1988), a role that earned her the Best Actress award at the 1989 European Film Awards. Other notable films include Secrets & Lies (1996), All or Nothing (2002), Vera Drake (2004), and Another Year (2010).
In the theatre realm, Sheen made an impactful appearance in 2007 as Lyn, alongside Ben Whishaw, in the world premiere of Philip Ridley’s Leaves of Glass at the Soho Theatre in London. She also portrayed the mother of Jamie, played by Jim Sturgess, in Ridley's feature film Heartless, further showcasing her range as an actress.
