Biography
Tsai Chin, known in Chinese as Zhou Caiqin, is a multifaceted talent recognized as an actress, director, educator, and author. She gained prominence in the United States for her memorable portrayal of Auntie Lindo in the acclaimed film The Joy Luck Club. Born as the third daughter of the renowned Peking opera performer Zhou Xinfang, Tsai Chin made history as the first Chinese student to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She furthered her education by earning a Master’s Degree from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts.
With a career that spans over fifty years across three continents, Tsai Chin has made significant contributions to theater and film. She graced the stages of London’s West End in The World of Susie Wong and dazzled audiences on Broadway in Golden Child. Her film credits include appearances in two James Bond movies, portraying a Bond girl in You Only Live Twice and appearing in Casino Royale. Additionally, her single "The Ding Dong Song," released by Decca, topped the music charts in Asia.
Notably, she was the first acting instructor permitted to teach in China after the Cultural Revolution, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s artistic revival. In China, she gained acclaim for her role as Grandmother Jia in the 2010 television series The Dream of Red Mansions.
