Biography

Embeth Jean Davidtz, born on August 11, 1965, is a talented actress and director originally from the United States but raised in South Africa. She gained fame for her performances in acclaimed films such as *Schindler's List*, *Matilda*, *Bridget Jones's Diary*, and *The Amazing Spider-Man*, as well as in notable television series including *In Treatment*, *Californication*, and *Mad Men*.

In 2024, Davidtz took a significant step in her career by making her directorial debut with *Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight*. This film is an adaptation of Alexandra Fuller's bestselling memoir, recounting her childhood on a farm in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. The film premiered at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Canada.

Born in Lafayette, Indiana, to South African parents John and Jean, Davidtz's early life was marked by frequent relocations, leading her family to Trenton, New Jersey, and eventually to South Africa when she was nine. With Dutch, English, and French heritage, she learned Afrikaans to adapt to her new environment, as her father became a lecturer at Potchefstroom University. She completed her secondary education at The Glen High School in Pretoria in 1983 before pursuing studies at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.

Davidtz's film career began in 1992 with a role in Sam Raimi's *Army of Darkness*, followed by her acclaimed performance as Helen Hirsch in *Schindler's List* in 1993. She continued to shine in various roles, including a significant part in the 1995 film *Murder in the First*.
