Kinuyo Tanaka
Biography
Kinuyo Tanaka (田中 絹代, Tanaka Kinuyo; 29 November 1909 – 21 March 1977) was a prominent Japanese actress and director, renowned for her significant contributions to cinema. Born in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Tanaka began her illustrious career at the age of seventeen with a standout performance in Heinosuke Gosho's *An Embarrassing Dream* (1927). She quickly rose to prominence, landing leading roles in films such as Yasujirō Ozu's *I Graduated, But...* (1929) and Gosho's *Aiyoku no ki* (1930). Notably, she appeared in Japan's first sound film, *The Neighbor's Wife and Mine* (1931), also directed by Gosho.
Tanaka maintained a significant collaborative relationship with celebrated director Kenji Mizoguchi, featuring in 15 of his films, including acclaimed works like *The Life of Oharu* (1952), *Ugetsu* (1953), and *Sansho the Bailiff* (1954). However, their partnership ended following Mizoguchi's opposition to her being hired as a director by the Nikkatsu studio. Tanaka's directorial debut came with *Love Letter* in 1953, making her the second Japanese woman to direct films after Sakane Tazuko. She went on to direct five films in total.
In addition to her extensive acting and directing career, Tanaka portrayed Noboru Yasumoto's mother in Akira Kurosawa's *Red Beard* (1965). Her performance in Kei Kumai's *Sandakan N° 8* won her the Best Actress Award at the 25th Berlin International Film Festival in 1975. Tanaka's final screen role was in 1976 in *Kita No Misaki*, marking the end of a remarkable journey in Japanese cinema.
