Guillermo del Toro
Biography
Guillermo del Toro Gómez (born October 9, 1964) is a renowned Mexican filmmaker, author, and artist known for his distinctive cinematic style that merges elements of fairy tales, gothic aesthetics, and horror. Del Toro has been a trailblazer in the dark fantasy genre, incorporating themes of Catholicism, imperfection, and underground imagery, along with striking practical effects and a signature amber lighting.
Over his prolific career, del Toro has worked on both Spanish-language films, including notable titles like Cronos (1993), The Devil’s Backbone (2001), and Pan's Labyrinth (2006), as well as English-language projects such as Mimic (1997), Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015), The Shape of Water (2017), Nightmare Alley (2021), and Pinocchio (2022).
In addition to directing, he has contributed as a producer or writer for films like The Orphanage (2007), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010), and the Hobbit trilogy (2012–2014). He co-authored The Strain trilogy with Chuck Hogan, which inspired a comic series and a television adaptation. Del Toro collaborated with DreamWorks Animation and Netflix for the animated Tales of Arcadia franchise. He is friends with fellow filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, collectively dubbed "The Three Amigos of Mexican Cinema." His accolades include three Academy Awards and recognition as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in 2018, along with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019.
