Ingrid Thulin
Biography
Ingrid Lilian Thulin (27 January 1926 – 7 January 2004) was a renowned Swedish film actress celebrated for her remarkable contributions to cinema. Born in Sollefteå, Ångermanland, Thulin was the daughter of Nanna and Adam Thulin, a fisherman. In her youth, she pursued ballet and, in 1948, was accepted into the prestigious Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in Stockholm.
Thulin’s illustrious career was closely affiliated with acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman, with whom she collaborated on several influential films. Notable entries in her filmography include Bergman's *Wild Strawberries* (1957), *The Magician* (1958)—where she famously portrayed a character dressed as a boy—*Winter Light* (1962), *The Silence* (1963), and *Cries and Whispers* (1972).
Her performance in *The Silence* earned her the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress in 1964, marking a significant moment in Swedish film as it was the award's inaugural year. Additionally, Thulin shared the Best Actress award at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival and won the David di Donatello Award in 1974, the same year she received a BAFTA nomination. In 1980, she served as the jury president for the 30th Berlin International Film Festival.
Married to Harry Schein, founder of the Swedish Film Institute, for over 30 years until their divorce in 1989, Thulin lived in various locations, including Paris and Italy. She eventually returned to Sweden for medical care, passing away from cancer in Stockholm, just shy of her 78th birthday.
