Reed Hadley
Biography
Reed Hadley (June 25, 1911 – December 11, 1974) was a notable American actor recognized for his contributions to film, television, and radio.
Born Reed Herring in Petrolia, Texas, near Wichita Falls, he was the son of Bert Herring, an oil driller, and his wife Minnie, and had a sister named Bess Brenner. Hadley spent his formative years in Buffalo, New York, where he graduated from Bennett High School and participated in local theater productions at the Studio Arena Theater. He was married to Helen, with whom he had a son named Dale. Before his Hollywood career, Hadley performed in a stage production of Hamlet in New York City.
Over a career spanning thirty-five years, Hadley portrayed various roles, from villains to law enforcement heroes, in films such as The Baron of Arizona (1950), The Half-Breed (1952), Highway Dragnet (1954), and Big House, USA (1955). He was known for his deep bass voice, which he utilized in numerous documentary narrations. He starred in two television series: Racket Squad (1950–1953) as Captain Braddock and The Public Defender (1954–1955) as Bart Matthews, a fictional attorney for the underprivileged. Additionally, he was the first actor to voice the cowboy hero Red Ryder on radio in the 1940s.
In the realm of military films, Hadley narrated several Department of Defense projects, including "Operation Ivy," related to the first hydrogen bomb test. He held a Top Secret security clearance during this time. After a prolific career, Hadley passed away from a heart attack at the age of 63 in Los Angeles, California, and was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills. His legacy endures, recognized by his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his television achievements.
