Biography
Johnny Weissmuller, originally named Johann Peter Weißmüller, was born on June 2, 1904, in what was then Austro-Hungary, and later became a prominent figure in American sports and entertainment before his passing on January 20, 1984. Renowned as one of the premier swimmers of the 1920s, Weissmuller achieved remarkable success in the aquatic realm, securing five gold medals and one bronze at the Olympic Games. In addition to his Olympic triumphs, he dominated the national stage, clinching fifty-two U.S. National Championships and establishing an impressive sixty-seven world records throughout his swimming career.
Transitioning from the pool to the silver screen, Weissmuller became the sixth actor to take on the iconic role of Tarzan. He starred in a total of twelve films as the legendary jungle hero, cementing his status as the most recognizable portrayal of the character. His signature Tarzan yell, a distinctive and memorable sound, has left a lasting legacy, often replicated in subsequent adaptations of the Tarzan story.
