Charles Grodin
Biography
Charles Sidney Grodin (April 21, 1935 – May 18, 2021) was a multifaceted American talent known for his work as an actor, comedian, author, and television host. Grodin embarked on his acting journey in the 1960s, gaining recognition through various television series, notably The Virginian. His film career took off after a small role in the classic horror film Rosemary's Baby (1968), followed by a standout lead performance in Elaine May's The Heartbreak Kid (1972). He also appeared in significant supporting roles in renowned films such as Mike Nichols's Catch-22 (1970), the 1976 reimagining of King Kong, and Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait (1978).
With his signature deadpan humor, Grodin became a familiar face in numerous comedies throughout the late 20th century, including Real Life (1979), Seems Like Old Times (1980), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), and Ishtar (1987), along with notable performances in Dave (1993) and Clifford (1994). He gained further acclaim co-starring in the action-comedy Midnight Run (1988) and the family favorite Beethoven (1992). Grodin was a regular on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Late Night with David Letterman.
In the mid-1990s, he stepped away from acting to focus on writing and hosting, becoming a commentator for 60 Minutes II in 2000. He made a return to the screen in the mid-2010s, featuring in FX's Louie and Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young (2014). His accolades include a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special in 1978 and a Golden Globe nomination for The Heartbreak Kid.
