Biography

Max Everitt Rosenbloom, known as "Slapsie Maxie," was born on November 1, 1907, in Leonard Bridge, Connecticut. He gained fame as a professional boxer, actor, and television personality. Rosenbloom earned his nickname from a journalist who noted his unique open-gloved boxing style. In 1930, he captured the New York light heavyweight title, and by 1932, he had secured the World Light Heavyweight Championship, a title he defended until November 1934 when he was defeated by Bob Olin. His boxing technique was characterized by a strategy of scoring points through movement and evasive maneuvers, making him a challenging target for opponents. However, the toll of countless punches to the head eventually impacted his motor skills.

Transitioning to acting in 1937, Rosenbloom became a well-known character actor, often portraying comedic "big guy" roles in films such as *Each Dawn I Die*. He officially hung up his gloves in 1939. He opened Slapsy Maxie's, one of the first comedy clubs, in San Francisco and later in Los Angeles. Throughout his career, he appeared on radio and television, making memorable guest appearances on programs like *The Fred Allen Show* and starring in Rod Serling's groundbreaking television drama, *Requiem for a Heavyweight*, where he played an ex-boxer recounting tales of his past.

Rosenbloom's nightclub, Slapsy Maxie's, is featured in the 2013 film *Gangster Squad*, set in 1949, highlighting its significance in Los Angeles nightlife. He passed away on March 6, 1976, leaving behind a legacy in both the boxing and entertainment worlds.
