Biography
Winona Laura Horowitz, born on October 29, 1971, is an acclaimed American actress known professionally as Winona Ryder. She has earned numerous accolades throughout her career, including a Golden Globe Award, and has received two Academy Award nominations. Ryder first gained recognition for her unique roles in earlier films before stepping into more significant parts during the 1990s.
Her acting journey began with her debut in the film Lucas (1986), but it was her standout performance in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988) that catapulted her into the spotlight. Ryder solidified her status with key roles in iconic films such as Heathers (1989), Mermaids (1990), Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992). She received critical acclaim and consecutive Academy Award nominations for her performances as May Welland in Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence (1993) and Jo March in Little Women (1994). During this prolific period, she also appeared in Reality Bites (1994), How to Make an American Quilt (1995), and Girl, Interrupted (1999), the latter of which she executive-produced.
After a brief career hiatus following the 2002 film Mr. Deeds, Ryder made her comeback in 2009 with Star Trek. She garnered two Screen Actors Guild nominations in 2010 and later starred in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (2016–present) as Joyce Byers. Ryder's personal life, including her relationship with Johnny Depp and a highly publicized shoplifting incident, has often captured media attention. She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000 and has been candid about her struggles with anxiety and depression.
