Biography

Martha Hyer, born on August 10, 1924, in Fort Worth, Texas, was a distinguished American actress whose career spanned several decades. After studying at Northwestern University and joining the Pi Beta Phi sorority, she ventured into acting, making her film debut in 1946 with The Locket. Hyer quickly became a familiar face in Hollywood, showcasing her talent in notable films such as So Big (1953), Sabrina (1954), and The Delicate Delinquent (1956), which marked Jerry Lewis's first film without Dean Martin. She also appeared in Houseboat (1958), Ice Palace (1960), and The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), among numerous others. Her versatility extended to the Beach Party genre, where she starred alongside Keenan Wynn in Bikini Beach (1964).

Hyer's most prominent role came in 1958 when she played alongside Frank Sinatra in Vincente Minnelli's Some Came Running, earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She was also considered for the iconic role of Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

On television, her memorable performance as Hannah Haley in the Western series Rawhide helped solidify her status in the industry. Hyer married producer Hal B. Wallis in 1966, and they shared a loving partnership until his passing in 1986. Martha Hyer passed away on May 31, 2014, at the age of 89 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she had spent her later years.
