Howard Vernon
Biography
Howard Vernon, originally named Mario Walter Lippert, was born on July 15, 1908, in Baden-Baden, Germany, to a Swiss father and a German mother. He embarked on his career as a stage and radio performer, later transitioning into film where he would leave a significant mark. Known for portraying sinister roles, Vernon often took on characters such as Nazi officers, gangsters, and psychopathic villains in both French and American cinema following World War II.
Throughout his career, Vernon collaborated with renowned directors including Jean-Pierre Melville, Sacha Guitry, Fritz Lang, Roger Vadim, Jean-Luc Godard, and Jesús Franco. In the 1960s, he developed a fruitful partnership with Franco, becoming a prominent figure in many of the director’s low-budget horror and erotic films, predominantly shot in Spain and France.
Vernon's unique ability to embody dark characters made him a distinctive presence in the film industry, and his contributions spanned several decades. He passed away on July 25, 1996, in Issy-les-Moulineaux, France, just ten days after celebrating his 88th birthday, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be appreciated by film enthusiasts.
