Denver Dell Pyle (May 11, 1920 – December 25, 1997) was a prominent American actor celebrated for his memorable roles in television and film. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Briscoe Darling Jr. on the beloved series The Andy Griffith Show, and later as Jesse Duke in the hit show The Dukes of Hazzard, which aired from 1979 to 1985.
Pyle was born in Bethune, Colorado, to Ben H. Pyle, a farmer, and his wife Maude. He had a brother, Willis, who made a name for himself as an animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios and UPA. After finishing high school, Pyle briefly attended Colorado State University before pursuing a career in entertainment, relocating to Los Angeles in 1940. His initial foray into the industry saw him working as a drummer and band member until his enlistment in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was injured in the Battle of Guadalcanal and subsequently received a medical discharge in 1942, later serving in the United States Merchant Marine as the war drew to a close.
In 1955, Pyle married Marilee Carpenter, with whom he had two sons, David and Tony, before their divorce in 1970. He remarried Tippie Johnston in 1983, remaining together until his passing. Pyle succumbed to lung cancer on Christmas Day in 1997. He was interred in an unmarked grave at Forreston Cemetery in Texas, alongside his second wife's parents. His legacy endures through his iconic performances in television history.
