Biography

Natalie Schafer (November 5, 1900 – April 10, 1991) was an American actress renowned primarily for her portrayal of Lovey Howell on the beloved sitcom Gilligan's Island, which aired from 1964 to 1967.

Schafer's acting journey began on Broadway, where she graced the stage in 17 productions from 1927 to 1959, primarily taking on supporting roles. In 1941, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film. Noteworthy Broadway appearances included Lady in the Dark (1941–42), The Doughgirls (1942–44), and Romanoff and Juliet (1957–58). Additionally, she participated in a revival of Six Characters in Search of an Author, directed by the esteemed Sir Tyrone Guthrie, and took part in regional theater, including an off-Broadway production of The Killing of Sister George alongside Claire Trevor.

Throughout her film career, Schafer often portrayed sophisticated characters. Her iconic role as Lovey Howell on Gilligan's Island was a defining moment in her television career, which she reprised in three made-for-TV films: Rescue from Gilligan's Island (1978), The Castaways on Gilligan's Island (1979), and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island (1981), as well as in animated series like The New Adventures of Gilligan (1974–77) and Gilligan's Planet (1982–83).

In 1969, she joined the cast of The Survivors, a prime time soap opera on ABC, which, despite a star-studded lineup, was short-lived. Later, she played Helen Collins on CBS's daytime soap, Search for Tomorrow, and followed that with a role on Love of Life.
