Biography

Tanie Kitabayashi (北林谷栄, Kitabayashi Tanie; May 21, 1911 – April 27, 2010) was a distinguished Japanese actress and voice actress, originally named Reiko Ando, and born in Tokyo. Her career began on the theater stage, where she quickly gained recognition for her compelling portrayals of older female characters. In 1950, she co-founded the renowned Mingei Theatre, which significantly contributed to Japan's cultural landscape.

Kitabayashi's talent was widely acknowledged, earning her accolades and critical acclaim during her career. Notably, in 1960, she received the Best Actress award at both the 10th Blue Ribbon Awards and the Mainichi Film Awards for her performance in the film "Kiku to Isamu." Her remarkable ability continued to shine in later years, as she secured the Japan Academy Prize for Best Actress for her role in "Rainbow Kids" (1991), a performance that also garnered recognition from the Mainichi Film Awards and Kinema Junpo.

Throughout her life, Kitabayashi left an indelible mark on Japanese cinema and theater, admired for her versatility and depth. She passed away on April 27, 2010, at the age of 98, due to pneumonia in a Tokyo hospital, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by fans and peers alike.
