Biography
Walter Matthau, born Walter John Matthow on October 1, 1920, was a celebrated American actor, comedian, and director whose legacy in film and theater remains influential. Matthau gained widespread recognition for his memorable roles in a variety of films, including the gripping drama *A Face in the Crowd* (1957) and Elvis Presley's *King Creole* (1958). His comedic talent shone brightly in *The Bad News Bears* (1976), where he portrayed the frustrated coach of a struggling little league team.
Matthau's enduring partnership with fellow actor Jack Lemmon resulted in ten films together, including the iconic *The Odd Couple* (1968), *The Front Page* (1974), and *Grumpy Old Men* (1993). His performance in the Billy Wilder classic *The Fortune Cookie* (1966) earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also showcased his versatility in films like *Charade* (1963) directed by Stanley Donen, *Hello, Dolly!* (1969) with Gene Kelly, and *California Suite* (1978) by Herbert Ross.
On the stage, Matthau was acclaimed for originating the role of Oscar Madison in Neil Simon's *The Odd Couple*, winning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 1965. His accolades include two BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe, alongside an Emmy nomination in 1963 for *The DuPont Show of the Week*. In 1982, Matthau was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He passed away on July 1, 2000, leaving behind a rich legacy in the performing arts.
