He first captured the public's attention with the cult classic C'est arrivé près de chez vous (1992), a darkly humorous mockumentary in which he portrayed a charismatic serial killer. This breakout role solidified his reputation as an artist capable of blending humor with a chilling intensity.

In the late 1990s and 2000s, Poelvoorde became a fixture in Franco-Belgian cinema, featuring in a series of successful comedies such as Les Randonneurs (1997), Le Vélo de Ghislain Lambert (2001), and Podium (2004).
