Richard Dawkins
Biography
Clinton Richard Dawkins, FRS, FRSL, born on March 26, 1941, is a distinguished British ethologist and evolutionary biologist, renowned for his impactful writing and advocacy of science. He served as an emeritus fellow at New College, Oxford, and was the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until his retirement in 2008.
Dawkins gained widespread recognition with his seminal work, *The Selfish Gene*, published in 1976, which revolutionized the understanding of evolution by emphasizing a gene-centric approach and introducing the concept of memes. His 1982 book, *The Extended Phenotype*, further advanced evolutionary biology by suggesting that the influence of genes extends beyond the individual organism to affect the environment and other living beings.
A vocal atheist and humanist, Dawkins holds the position of Vice President at the British Humanist Association and is a prominent supporter of the Brights movement. He is particularly noted for his critiques of creationism and intelligent design. In *The Blind Watchmaker* (1986), he dismantled the watchmaker analogy, illustrating that complex life can arise through natural processes without a guiding hand.
His 2006 publication, *The God Delusion*, argues against the existence of a supernatural creator and has resonated widely, selling over two million copies and being translated into 31 languages. Often dubbed "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his vigorous defense of evolutionary theory, Dawkins continues to engage audiences through his books and media appearances, fostering a deeper understanding of science and skepticism.
